On Friday I coodinated the League of Woman Voters (LWV) dinner fundraiser. I’ve returned to the Board of the League as Finance Chair. Senator Leticia Van De Putte was a gracious guest as she was roasted by Chief Justice Alma Lopez, St. Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon, Judge Karen Crouch, and Carlos Guerra. I appreciate the work that the League is doing to publish the “Voter Guide” and coordinate televised candidate forums. The dinner is the only fundraiser the organization has to supplement costs.

I’ve personally utilized the “Voter Guide” for many years to research my voting preference. The mission of the LWV, which is a nonpartisan political organization, is to encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in government and influence public policy through education and advocacy. The LWV believes that democratic government depends upon the informed and active participation of its citizens and requires that governmental bodies protect the citizen’s right to know by giving notice of proposed actions, holding open meetings and making public records accessible. One big hug to Toyota Motor Corporation and its on site suppliers who will be initiating a two week clean up of City parks. Each of the seventeen sites will get a boast of “tender loving care” through this initiative. There is always more need than money in the city budget to do maintenance of our city parks. Woodlawn Lake Park is one of the parks that will benefit by extra tree planting, graffiti cleanup and trash pick up on October 7th.

The San Antonio Parks Foundation also designates a city park clean up two or three times a year. This weekend SAPF is sponsoring Jazz Alive at Travis Park downtown. All proceeds go back into beautification of our parks. This is a wonderful event and weather reports look very good for sitting back and listening to outstanding jazz.

So this is a great weekend for our city parks.  Thank you Toyota and its suppliers and the San Antonio Parks Foundation for caring about giving back to our community and creating a better quality of life to all the residents of San Antonio. Un abrazo!

Many have asked how my former staff are doing.

Byron Gipson moved to Dallas to be closer to his family. He currently is working for Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson.

Maria Alejandro is the Program Assistant of the Community Leadership Institute whose mission is to provide leadership development, training, and mentoring throughout the City.

Joleen Garcia is the Executive Director of The Martinez Street Women’s Center. Their programs reach girls 9 to 14 with a stable environment through free after-school programs and a summer camp.

Lisa Juarez is working at the City of San Antonio’s Central Library.

Each worked hard to provide good customer service to the City. I’m so proud that each is continuing to serve our community.

Everywhere I go the common question asked is “What have you been up to?” So let’s catch up.  My biggest blessing has been the opportunity to reconnect with family and friends.  I had the opportunity to help my former colleague, Patti Radle, in the successful Inner City Development food pantry fundraiser. Then I organized the Premier of the children’s picture book celebrating the life of Emma Tenayuca, the courageous organizer of 12,000 San Antonio pecan shellers in 1938.

I’m now involved in several boards which span the arts, women’s health, police citizen advisory, camp for children with disabilities and social worker’s PAC political organization. I was a guest speaker at St. Mary’s University and am planning to return next semester.

My new project is organizing the September League of Women Voters annual dinner fundraiser.

I feel so blessed to have the chance to give back to the community I love.

On behalf of myself and my family, we wish you all a blessed and safe summer.   Let’s keep in touch.
